I figured I could perhaps post part three of my essay onto here, as well as in an email.
Tennis has been underestimated by many and classified by some as not being a challenging sport. With numerous reasons, it is easy to conclude that tennis is a difficult sport, and should be recognized as so.
I know it's rough, but perhaps it's a start?
P1) Courts are always two - three degrees hotter than the temperature outside
P2) A match can last three hours
P3) A match is a continuous sprint
I hope I fulfilled the task.
I like your zeal, but I think you may want to reconsider some of your premises based on technicalities.
ReplyDeleteFor instance "A match can last three hours." Just because it lasts three hours doesn't prove anything on its own.
Also, "A match is a continuous sprint." Is it really continuous or are there points to rest during/ is there some standing around during serves and outs?
I played tennis, and can relate to this. But feel I would fail in trying to prove this topic. But as I remember, tennis was very technical and had some elements that did not happen by chance. Maybe you could provide a good argument on this after all.
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough argument to prove. Your premises that you have stated could be said to be opinion. You could probably prove that the court is hotter and that matches can last three hours, but is it really a continuos sprint. I mean, you must get to rest sometimes. Saying it is a continuous sprint is like saying soccer is a continuos sprint for 90 minutes, which is untrue. Soccer players get breaks when the ball goes out of bounds and during substitutions and during injuries. I know not all of those things apply to tennis, but some do and it would be hard to argue for something that is opinionated like that.I think you could make a good argument out of this by reconstructing the premises and making the argument a little bit stronger overall.
ReplyDeleteI think that this would be a tough one to support. As these guys have pointed out the premises aren't the strongest and can be maneuvered around with some technicality. Maybe you could go into something about how many different parts of your body are involved in tennis? There's obviously the physical part but you could maybe go into the mental fatigue and concentration and different parts of the brain and stuff like that? Could be worth a shot.
ReplyDeleteA nap can last three hours, but we wouldn't take that as evidence that napping was a serious sport...
